Professor of Restorative Dentistry
Professor Walmsley is Professor of Restorative Dentistry. He has held several influential positions in Dentistry and within the University of Birmingham.
He is past scientific advisor of the British Dental Association, where he led and commented on scientific issues related to dentistry and oral health. During his term as president of the Association of Dental Education in Europe (ADEE), Professor Walmsley created a global network of contacts promoting dental education and instigated an influential series of articles on the Profile and Competency of European Dentists. He has also enhanced the international standing of research and education within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, through his role as director of internationalisation role.
Professor Walmsley’s own research is sponsored by the department of UK Research and Innovation, and he is a recipient of EU funding. His research in Ultrasonics is cited widely across dental specialities including periodontology, endodontics, and oral surgery. His interest in evidence-based dentistry arose from highly cited publications on the use of powered and manual toothbrushing. His overall research activity is truly interdisciplinary with publications in high impact scientific journals with colleagues from different specialties. Such interdisciplinary research is now the main area of interest at the University of Birmingham.
