Clinical Dental Technician
Mike began his career in dentistry in May 1973 as an apprentice dental technician and qualified in 1977 before going on to gain advanced qualifications in orthodontics, crown and bridge technology and prosthetics. He founded Northern Orthodontics which provided a full laboratory service to dental clinics and hospitals throughout the UK. In 1992 he received the Aspin Award from the British Institution of Dental and Surgical Technologists for the best piece of crown and bridge work.
Next, Mike opened the Fylde Dental Clinic in St Anne's, a CQC registered dental surgery currently employing a dentist and hygiene therapist with supporting nurses and dental technician.
In 2009 Mike saw an opportunity to convince UCLan to offer a course in Clinical Dental Technology as training was non-existent at the time. Subsequently, he became the course founder and clinical lead. For several years he worked as their lecturer in orthodontics and prosthetics. At the time of writing, the UCLan course remains the sole provider for CDT training within the UK.
Around the same time of qualification as a CDT, he was asked to become one of the founder board members of the BACDT, a professional association representing the needs of UK CDTs. In 2013 he became the BACDT President as well as the Director for Training with the Dental Laboratories Association.
When the Advancing Dental Care Group was founded, Mike was established as a senior stakeholder. His involvement secured the first pilot scheme in the UK to include a CDT to provide dental domiciliary care to patients in northwest England.
More recently Mike was appointed as the chair for the CDT and the co-chair, DT section, with the College of General Dentistry ahead of its launch in June 2022.
Prior to the arrival of his two granddaughters, Mike's hobbies included flying light aircraft, offshore racing, diving, and maintaining a classic sports car. Now, however, his pastimes include pony club, skating, and playing Barbie dream house.
