  • About This Course

Merskey (1979) defined pain as an, 'unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential damage, or described in terms of such damage'. The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) has endorsed this definition. Pain involves a motivational-affective component as well as a sensory-discriminitive dimension and can occur without noiception.

Aims

This course aims to provide learners with knowledge and understanding of appropriate techniques for administering local anaesthetic and reasons why you may not achieve a satisfactory anaesthesia. An overview of the appropriate pain management techniques available to dental professionals and the factors that may influence the decision for local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic, is given.

  • To understand appropriate pain management techniques.
  • To understand factors that may influence the decision for local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic.
