  • About This Course

Autotransplantation is an under-utilised technique in which a tooth is surgically repositioned within the same patient. It can be described as a controlled re-implantation of an extracted tooth into a new, surgically prepared socket.

If conducted with a multidisciplinary team, autotransplantation can be an ideal treatment option for patients with failing or missing teeth.

Some studies have reported a 90% survival rate of transplanted teeth, yet there are still undesirable outcomes such as dentoalveolar ankylosis or root resorption, especially in teeth with complete root formation.

Developments in cone beam CT and 3D prototyping have enabled the fabrication of accurate surgical templates which can be used to prepare the recipient site immediately prior to transplantation. This has resulted in a dramatically reduced extra-oral time for the transplant teeth which can be expected to improve success rates further.

This recorded webinar will highlight key surgical techniques for optimum success rates, digital technologies that can enhance autotransplantations, a spectrum of orthodontic considerations and tips for GDPs on recognising patients who will benefit from early/appropriate referral for this intervention.

Aims

This course aims to provide learners with knowledge and understanding of autotransplantation, an under-utilised technique in which a tooth is surgically repositioned within the same patient.

Objectives

During this course learners will be able to:

  • Discuss the relevance of autotransplantations in orthodontics.
  • Outline the considerations and principles of when to utilise autotransplantation.
  • Explain the surgical protocols for autotransplantation.
  • Outline how to recognise these cases, for referral or treatment.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course the learner will gain an understanding of:

  • The relevance of autotransplantation in orthodontics; the protocol for surigcal techniques to provide the best success and survival rates and the appropriate referral and timing of these cases.
